Is "Eras i Tanatas" video to Unleash a New Wave of Post-Punk from Belarus? Electro post-punk band Sož is redefining the post-Soviet post-punk sound with a more dynamic, high-energy approach. Their latest video, "Eras i Tanatas," blends pulsing electronics with sharp post-punk grit. The track’s title references Freud’s Eros and Thanatos, exploring the eternal struggle between life and death — a theme perfectly captured in the song’s intense new music video. One of the band’s concert anthems was filmed by Scottish cinematographer Mike Baird in Warsaw during the Christmas holiday season. The lyrics were written in 2020, a year of political upheaval in Belarus, before the band emigrated. Yet, the storyline chosen by the musicians—a visit to a psychotherapist — feels especially relevant today. Sož has already made waves with their standout animated videos, including "Malako" (Milk) and "Apošnija Tancory" (Last Dancers) — both of which have become their visual calling cards. Now, with "Eras i Tanatas," they take their signature style to the next level, pushing post-punk aesthetics into fresh, electrifying territory. Belarusan post-punk has grown into a global movement, led by Molchat Doma and Nürnberg. While Sož shares a kinship with these bands, they distinguish themselves by eschewing the “post-Soviet” label. Instead, they illuminate Belarusan society, reflecting on its post-colonial struggle for self-definition. The band also represents a broader wave of Belarusan artists relocating across Europe, a trend that accelerated after the country’s political turmoil in 2020. Today, Sož calls Poland home. Poland has become a key hub for emerging bands from the East. Recently, along with their fellow musicians from the “Belarusan Cold Wave in Poland” scene, they sold out the Ludzie Wschodu (People of the East) festival in Warsaw. The Polish audience warmly received and deeply understood the message of the band’s frontman, Baisan (known as writer Ales Plotka), who reminds us that his homeland is the last country in Europe still living in the realities described by Polish rock classics — such as Maanam's iconic phrase, “Borders: steel rivers, steel mountains.”
